Unavoidable I looked for peace in distant places
Across the water, down long roads
In books and conversations
And in the things that people told I thought it lived beyond the mountains
Past some finish line I'd missed
But every time I stopped my running
There it was, as quiet as this Unavoidable
Like morning finding every hill

Like sunlight resting on the sill I spent years trying to find it
Like it was somewhere else to be
Then I learned that peace was patient
And had been waiting here for me There it was beside the kettle
In the first cup of the day
There it was out in the garden
Watching all my plans give way There it was beside the dog bowl
At the gate when Bo came through
Nothing grand or earth-shattering
Just ordinary things made new Unavoidable
