About This Track
I thought of this idea for a song, when my grandson Joseph came over 1 day, and said, "its good to be home." Also because of what I let him get away with that I never let my kids do. If you have grandchildren, you know it is a different level of love.

GRANDKIDS FIRST
He comes through my screen door
With his shoes on the wrong feet,
Got a handful of rocks
And a frog in his pocket,
And a question just for me.
His daddy says, “You sure have changed,
You never let that slide.”
I hand that boy another cookie
And say, “Son, you’re probably right.”
I was learning how to be a dad,
Now I’ve learned what time is worth.
If I’d have known love came with this much fun,
I’d of had the grandkids first.
I used to say, “Maybe Sunday,”
When my own boy asked to play.
There was always one more shift to work,
And one more bill to pay.
There’s a little chair beside my recliner,
And we’ve got two down by the creek.
He says, “Papa, let’s go catch a big one!”
I say, “Grab your pole and come with me.”
I was learning how to be a dad,
Now I’ve learned what time is worth.
If I’d have known love came with this much fun,
I’d of had the grandkids first.
[Bridge — softer, almost spoken]
I’m sixty-three years old,
And my best friend’s only seven.
I hope he’ll be okay
If I wake up in heaven.
Hope he knows how much I loved him,
Hope his daddy tells him so,
And takes him to our fishing spot
When he needs somewhere to go.
So thank You, God, for grandkids,
For these afternoons that last,
For a little hand that takes mine
And keeps me from walking fast.
And thank You for the boy I raised,
Who brings him through that door.
I thought I knew how big love got—
You showed me there was more.
I was learning how to be a dad,
Now I’ve learned what time is worth.
My world now revolves around him
Hes brought more joy to earth.
Now I'm Papa not just Dad
My heart is fit to burst
If I’d have known love came with this much fun,
I’d of had the grandkids first.
His daddy smiles, “Well, thanks a lot, Pop.”
I say, “Son, you know the truth—
I’d have never met this little man
If God hadn’t given me you first.”
