Unknown Number

I knew the number before I saw the screen / Some numbers stay where names have been / Three years gone and there it was / No photograph, no reason why / I let it ring until it stopped / Then watched the screen go dark / I told myself that was enough / Then heard it start again / There are things you don't forget / Just because you chose to leave / There are rooms you don't go back to / And questions you don't need / I answered without saying much / You asked if I was doing fine / I heard the old apartment door / Inside the way you said my name / You talked about the weather first / As if we'd only missed a week / I looked around the room I live in / Trying not to sound surprised / Why call me now? / Why call at all? / You had my number / You knew the cost / I don't know what you wanted / I don't know what I wanted too / But when you said, Are you awake? / I knew exactly who was calling / I don't know what you wanted / Maybe nothing, maybe me / Some doors don't need opening / To tell you what they used to mean / You said you found an old photograph / Behind the drawer we never fixed / You laughed about the crooked frame / Then asked if I remembered it / I said I did / I said too much / Then neither one of us spoke / I don't know what you wanted / I don't know what I wanted too / But when you said, Are you awake? / I knew exactly who was calling / Maybe this is all it is / A number saved inside the past / A little proof that something happened / Something neither of us outlasted / The screen went dark / The room went on / I saved the number / Then deleted it again
